Our Council

The Council consists of 16 people. Fifteen members of the Council are directly elected by members of the society domiciled in Scotland together with members of Scottish Branches. The other Council member is the Honorary Treasurer who is elected or co-opted by the Council. Individuals standing for the Council must be members of the Society at the time of election or co-option. The Council may co-opt two additional members.

The Council agrees to abide by the objects, policies and methods of the Society.

 Mrs Denise Fagg MBE – Chair of MS Society Scotland

Denise Denise was elected Chairman of the MS Society Scotland in 2006 and a Trustee of the Board for MS Society (UK) in the same year. Denise has 30 years experience of working within the voluntary sector with an in-depth knowledge of Charity, Employment, Disability and Discrimination Legislation and was awarded the MBE in 2008.


 Mr John Ballantyne – Vice-Chair of the MS Society Scotland

John John Ballantyne joined the Council in September 2004. John is Chair of the Dundee Branch and has worked tirelessly over the years to support his local branch. John is a retired town planner. John’s wife has had MS for many years, so understands the illness and the how it affects the whole family unit.


 Mr Bryan Alexander

Bryan Bryan was voted onto the Council in 2006. Bryan worked as a solicitor until 2001 when he took early retirement. He has also worked voluntarily with the Citizens Advice Bureau, Crime prevention Panel and Community Council.


 Mrs Ann Barnes

Ann Ann was voted onto the Council in 2007 and has been a member of the Ayrshire and Arran branch of the MS Society for 12 years. Ann has a nursing background and also a keen interest in the grants system.


 Ms Maureen Kemp

Maureen Maureen has been serving on the Council since 2004 and this is Maureen’s 2nd term on the Council. Maureen’s experience serving on the Council over the last few years and knowledge of MS is of particular help to the MS Society Scotland.


 Mrs Letitia Smith

Letitia Letitia was co-opted onto the Council in 2007. Letitia currently works as a Director, Retail Markets Regulatory Risk for The Royal Bank of Scotland and brings immense financial services experience and guidance to the Council.


 Mr Tom Stove

Tom Tom joined the Council in September 2007 and was self-employed on Shetland until he retired on 1996. Tom has been a member of the Shetland branch for many years and been involved in local government for 16 years, including 4 years as Leader/Convener of Shetland Islands Council.


 Mr James Paterson

James James was diagnosed with MS 20 years ago and joined the Council in 2007. James is a director of the family engineering company and brings much relevant organising, financial and negotiating skills and experiences to the Council.


 Mrs Angela Monteith

Angela Angela is another island member who regularly flies down from Orkney. She has been on the council since 2006, and brings personal experience to Council, Angela has MS herself, was a carer for her father who also had MS and is Vice-Chair of Orkney Branch.


 Mr Paul Kelly

Paul Paul is now serving his 2nd term on the Council and has over the years worked very hard both within the Council and as Chair of the MS Society Scotland’s Lothian Branch. Paul always promotes MS awareness and encourages fundraising both locally and nationally.


 Ms Helga Prasch

Helga Helga joined the Council in 2004 and is now serving her 2nd term on the Council. Helga has worked as a ward manager in a rehabilitation hospital in Edinburgh and has extensive knowledge of the NHS and health issues.


 Mrs Karen Walker
Karen joined the Council in September 2005 and has worked as a depute head teacher and brings experience of financial management and strategic planning within the education environment.


 Mrs Jacquie Kent

Jacquie Jacquie was voted onto the Council in September 2007. Currently she is the President of MS Fife branch and Chair of the Homelands Trust. Jacquie was a local government officer, and has worked extensively with social workers, occupational therapists bringing much relevant and valuable skill to the Council.
