Planning for successMS Society Scotland Director Mark Hazelwood provides an overview of the Scottish plan of action in support of beating MS. In August 2007 the Society's UK Board approved a new five-year strategy called "Putting the Pieces Together to Beat MS". We were closely involved in developing this strategy in Scotland and have now produced a Scottish action plan setting out how we will contribute to the achievement of this ambitious and exciting strategy to maximise our ability to deliver for people affected by MS.So what are the plan's highlights? It is divided into five main sections - research, information, leading the MS agenda, raising standards of care and support, reflecting the key priorities identified in last year's membership opinion survey. The plan also has a sixth section that outlines the changes that will be required within the Society to support its delivery. On research the aim is for the Society to fund and promote research into finding the cause of and a cure for MS and improving care and services for people affected by MS. By 2012 this should mean Scottish research is contributing more to the international scientific understanding of MS and, through a Scottish MS Register, the incidence of MS in Scotland to be known. The plan's core aim on information is to ensure that the Society produces up-to-date, accurate and accessible information on MS issues, tailored to meet the needs of people affected by MS. To ensure that we are leading the MS agenda we will work to increase awareness of the impact of MS on people's lives, influence decision-makers, and inform people about what the Society can do to help. You may already have seen the Society’s new advertising campaign which is an early action in this area. The fourth area sets out our aim to raise standards of care for all people living with MS. This will mean people affected by MS having greater choice and control and more of the services they need by 2012, as well as national standards on MS having been developed for NHS services. The final aim, to provide support to all people affected by MS, is probably the most complex and ambitious. In addition to continuing to provide excellent respite care at Leuchie House, we want all people affected by MS to be able to access a set of local or national services provided by the Society that will support them in living with MS. The different MS Society section covers the outcomes relating to our fundraising needs, the development of effective structures, consistent policies and the rights skills mix in order to ensure good governance and the delivery of the strategy. It also sets out the need for people affected by MS to be involved in all aspects of our work and how we will make that happen. This plan will certainly be challenging to achieve. But we are confident that it addresses the priorities of people affected by MS in Scotland and gives us a solid framework for the Society’s work over the next five years. I hope that you will join us in playing your part in making it a reality. A summary of the action plan can be downloaded below. 2008-10 Summary |
