Preferred Provider Scheme (PPS) has been introduced in ScotlandPreferred Provider status is a prestigious award given by the MS Society to external care homes and domiciliary care services that are able to demonstrate their ability to provide high quality respite care services to people with MS. The distinctive feature of respite care is that it should be a positive experience for both the person with MS and their carer(s). It is a break from routine and a means of supporting the informal care network upon which local and health authorities rely on so heavily. The MS Society publishes a Directory of Respite Care Services (UK site link) which is intended to give information about the options available. This Directory is intended only to be a signposting mechanism and potential users are still required to contact individual providers to check that the care provided can meet their specific requirements. The MS Society is committed, however, to identifying those services that exceed basic requirements and to acknowledge this through the PPS. This gives potential providers an opportunity to be evaluated in terms of their ability to meet the need of people with MS, particularly those with advanced or complex needs. It should also provide users with greater confidence that the service is managed properly and gives the people actually delivering it the support, training and environment they require to provide good quality care.’ So far four services in Scotland have been awarded this status. Acceptance onto the PPS carries a number of direct advantages to providers including: • subsidised and free training for staff • marketing advantages such as the award of a PPS plaque • access to MS networks for advice and information • free membership of the MS Society These advantages will not just identify good practice but enhance it even further. |
