MS Society Scotland Policy ForumThe MS Society Scotland Policy Forum is open to anyone affected by MS. The aim is to hear your views so that our work in Policy and Campaigns is guided by people affected by MS. Our Communication and information team aims to influence government. In other words, we look at new developments in policy and legislation documents (produced by the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish Government) and try to ensure that the needs of people affected by MS are taken into account. There are many ways in which we can try to influence government (talking to MSPs, responding to consultations, Parliamentary debates, questions and petitions). Campaigning also creates media interest which increases public awareness of MS, helps to promote disability rights, and raises the profile of the Society. What does membership of the Policy Forum involve? As a member you will:
You can chose how much (or how little!) you would like to do. What is the place of the Policy Forum within MS Society Scotland? The Policy Forum is a consultative group providing valuable information for our Communications and information team. What have we done in 2008? The Policy Forum meets four times a year to discuss topical policy developments and agree policy and campaigns priority activities for the Society. At our June meeting this year we visited the Scottish Parliament courtesy of the office of Claire Baker MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife and heard from the Inverclyde Council on Disability about the local campaigning work it has done on key issues such as transport, accessible shopping, education, public services and welfare. The next big event is the parliamentary reception on 19th November at the Scottish Parliament. Other issues the Forum has looked at this year include the Health Board (Membership and Elections) Bill, the development of MS standards by NHS Quality Improvement Scotland, the views of MSPs about the MS Society Scotland and public awareness of MS. Why join the Policy Forum? Some views from our members:
