Housing

Having MS doesn't necessarily mean you will have to move house, or make adaptations but it is important to ensure that your housing is suitable, particularly if your mobility is or becomes restricted.

Full assessment of your environmental needs, now and in the future, is best carried out by an occupational therapist (OT), usually as part of a comprehensive community care assessment or a review of existing assessment and care plan. Contact your local social work office to make an appointment.

When the assessment is completed and you discuss and agree what is needed to support you in your living (and working) environment, you may need to install equipment or make adaptations to your home.
 Funding
Community equipment and home adaptations may be eligible for funding through the Local Authority’s Home Improvement and Repairs Grants scheme and/or community equipment budget. The level of funding provided will usually be based on an assessment of your own financial position. You may be asked to contribute to the cost of the equipment or adaptations and /or need to apply for grants from trust funds and other organisations, such as the MS Society.

Read more about our grants scheme.

 Planning and organisation
In many parts of Scotland a Care and Repair organisation will support you in planning, contracting and organising funding for home adaptations and repairs.

If you decide to you need to move to more suitable accommodation, you should discuss your options with your OT and seek advice from a specialist disability housing support agency to explore the different housing options. Your local authority will also be able to provide you with information about council and local housing association tenancies.
