Support at Home

If you need help with:

  • personal care such as getting up, washing, dressing and going to the toilet
  • preparing food
  • shopping
  • paying household bills
  • getting around and carrying out routine tasks in your home safely

You should contact your local authority social work department and ask for a community care assessment. Tell them that MS affects your daily living and that you would like to have your needs assessed. If someone close to you provides any personal care to you, ask for a carers assessment too. You are entitled to ask for this – it is a legal right and social work departments must assess your needs if you ask.

Free personal care for over 65s
If you are over 65 you are entitled to free personal care if you have been assessed by your local authority as needing it.

Personal care includes
- Help with personal hygiene
- Continence Management
- Help with food and diet
- Help with problems of immobility
- Assistance with simple treatments
- Assistance with dressing and getting in and out of bed

For details of free personal care please visit www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Health/care/17655
