Launch of a National Register of people with MS in Scotland
18.09.06
The Launch of a Register of People with MS in Scotland took place on 30 October 2006. 170 people attended, mainly people with MS and their carers, also NHS professionals, academics and other researchers. All were there to hear about the register, as well as see a variety of presentations showcasing some of the exciting current research into MS in Scotland. Lewis Macdonald, Deputy Minister for Health and Community Care, opened the event saying, “Scotland has the highest prevalence of MS in the world, so it is essential that we are at the forefront of research into the causes of, and treatments for, this debilitating condition.” One of the main aims of the day was to raise awareness of the project. The first phase of development will be to put in place a system for collecting data on the newly diagnosed; the second phase will identify and include all those already diagnosed. The next hurdle will be to apply for ethical approval for the project, as the data to be held is of a personal and sensitive nature. The response to the Launch has been very heartening and Claire Kennett, the Register Development Manager, said 'I would like to thank all of those who have contacted me to ask for more information, or even put forward their details for inclusion. As soon as ethical approval is given, their details will go on.' In the meantime all will be kept informed of the progress of the project, and if you wish to be included in these mailings, please contact Claire Kennett.
