Trustees announce respite care decision10.06.10The MS Society’s Board of Trustees today announces that the Society will no longer directly provide residential respite care. We will instead move to a more personalised system of support, providing a larger number of people across the UK with more choice and control. The announcement comes after a year long review and consultation process, during which more than 1600 with people with MS and their carers contributed their views. Many people we spoke to rated the care and support they received at every one of the Society’s centres very highly; but overwhelmingly they said they wanted more personalised services, more choice and holiday-style breaks. Plans will now be made to transfer the services of the MS Society’s care centres in England (based in York, Horley in Surrey and Leamington Spa in Warwickshire) to an alternative provider. Our care centre in East Lothian in Scotland, Leuchie House, is not owned by the Society but we will explore options for transferring the service to another provider. If this is not possible then we will close Leuchie House by the end of the year. The provision of quality information, accrediting other services, giving grants and campaigning and influencing other providers will all now be a high priority. Ultimately, the Society will provide a comprehensive system of support to more people affected by MS. If you have any questions about the review, the outcome or your respite care services, please get in touch using the details below. respitecare@mssociety.org.uk 020 8438 0925 Care Services MS Society 372 Edgware Road NW2 6ND London Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the consultation process.
